Melungeon - A term traditionally applied to one of a number of "tri-racial isolate" groups of the southeastern United States, mainly in the Cumberland Gap area of central Appalachia, which includes portions of east Tennessee, southwest Virginia, and east Kentucky. Tri-racial describes populations thought to be of mixed European, sub-Saharan African, and Native American ancestry. Although there is no consensus on how many such groups exist, estimates range as high as 200. Melungeons were often referred to as of Portuguese or Native American origin.
Beginning in 1995, the researcher Paul Heinegg has published documentation of numerous families of free people of color in the upper south,
whose ancestors were free in colonial Virginia before the American Revolutionary War. His historic research found that most such families in the censuses of 1790-1810 in North Carolina and Virginia, including numerous ones now identified as Melungeon ancestors, could be traced to free descendants of unions between white women and African men in colonial Virginia.

Born: about 1632-5 in Virginia
Race: probably a mulatto (father a negro and mother probably white)
Married: (wife unknown)
Died: by 1704 in New Kent County, Virginia (probably about 70 years old)
Proof of Parentage: Of the fewer than one hundred African men who resided in Virginia before 1640, John Punch is the only man who has a surname similar to Bunch. John Punch was an adult male living in the period in which John Bunch was born in Virginia, and resided in the same county. This evidence strongly suggests that John Punch was the father of John Bunch born about 1632-5.

Died: shortly after November 16, 1727 in Chowan County, North Carolina
Proof of Parentage: John Bunch born about 1632-5, initially resided near where Paul Bunch born about 1652-8, is first found. The associations are remarkably suggestive because John Bunch born 1632-5, is the only known candidate who could be the father of John Bunch born about 1655-70, and Paul Bunch born 1670.
